Elisabeth of Bohemia archives accessible to researchers

Elisabeth of Bohemia (1618-1680) was a philosopher best known for her extensive correspondences with René Descartes. Throughout her lifetime, she also had letter exchanges with family members, scientists, philosophers, politicians, and learned men and women from various European countries.

Prof. Sabrina Ebbersmeyer has spent years compiling an extensive archive of Elisabeth’s letters. If you are interested in accessing the archives for your research, please contact student assistants Ida Marie Munck (qcd524@ku.dk) or Julie Raunow Nørgård (gbl165@hum.ku.dk) for an appointment.

You can also read prof. Ebbersmeyer’s article indexing a substantial part of Elisabeth’s letters, published in the Journal of the History of Philosophy: Ebbersmeyer, S. (2020). An Inventory of the Extant Correspondence of Elisabeth of Bohemia, Princess Palatine (1618–1680). Journal of the History of Philosophy 58(2), 325-398.
