Networking workshop with the NOTCOM team

Collaborative workshop between the WHENCE project and the NOTCOM project.

NOTCOM is a philosophical study of common notions, collective inquiry, and dissemination strategies in seventeenth-century natural science, with special focus on the role of so-called “common notions”. Mogens Lærke, Senior Researcher at the CNRS (French National Centre for Scientific Research), leads the ERC Advanced Grant project on “Science and consensus in the 17th century”.

This workshop brings together researchers from both projects to explore shared research interests, identify synergies, and examine potential future academic collaboration. A central point of connection is the concept of consensus. While NOTCOM investigates scientific consensus, this topic resonates with WHENCE – particularly when looking at the early modern period, where consensus on gender (in)equality was notoriously difficult to establish. Through team presentations, we aim to spark a broader conversation on shared ideas, common notions, and early modern history.
